Dan Covey has been working
professionally since 1980. Before embarking on his professional
career, he studied at West Virginia University from 1976 to1980. After
leaving WVU, he worked for the Disney Organization in a range of roles,
then for a variety of theaters in Boston, and lately as a freelance lighting
designer and theater renovation advisor in Washington DC.
Walt Disney World,
Florida - 1980 to 1983:
Worked on the opening crew for EPCOT center, acting as senior technical
director for the theater and stage in the Germany pavilion (1982).
Boston - 1983 to 1984:
Freelance lighting Technician, working in various theaters in the
greater Boston area, primarily ART Theater (where he worked on the
pre-Broadway production of Big River) and (Huntington Theatre where he was
assistant master electrician) - 1983 to 1984
Walt Disney World, Florida -
1984 to 1995
EPCOT Center - working on fireworks shows (1984 - 1985)
Convention and special events lighting designer at the Contemporary Hotel
(1985 - 1988)
Disney-MGM Studio Theme Park 1989 opening crew and senior technician in
charge of lighting designs for conventions and park special events at the
studio (1989 - 1990)
Disney-MGM Studio Theme Park senior technical coordinator in charge of
conventions and special-events from 1991-1995.
Washington DC area - 1995
to present:
Freelance Lighting Designer, working primarily in the DC area for a
wide-range of theaters, opera, and limited-run productions.
Technical advisor on Source Theatre Company's major renovation project
(re-opened in
1999), focusing on the technical requirements of the newly opened-up space.
Advisor on Theater Alliance's H Street Playhouse renovation
project (opened in 2002).
Atlas Performing Arts Center - Theater advisor for a massive renovation
which transformed
a ruined landmark building into a new complex of performing arts spaces (opened
in 2006).
Atlas Performing Arts Center
- 2005 to 2007:
Technical Director, serving as technical liaison between the Atlas
Performing Arts Center and
rental performance/event organizations, roles related to the care of the facility,
in-house technical training, and start-up issues pertaining to the
new performing and rehearsal spaces.
